I recently had the great good fortune to hook up an almost 3 month teaching gig filling in for a woman on maternity leave. I got to teach Spanish and study skills (a lovely touch of irony, that…given my track record as a high school student). I was more than a little apprehensive going in, never having taught kids that age, and also having heard horror stories of the hormone-ridden hell that it can be. And, to my eternal surprise, I had an absolute blast and got to work with and befriend a bevy of curious, intelligent, kind, wacky, interesting teenagers.
The job ended this last thursday and I was devestated. Even though I’m completely stoked about getting back on the road (I have the ticket to colombia in my grubby little hands as we speak), I am sincerely going to miss walking into that school every day and experiencing the sizzling energy and optimism that those kids just naturally exude.
So, to all of you amazing “walugans” THANK YOU!! TAKE CARE!! STAY IN TOUCH!! and as a final spanish assignment the job of translating this:

HEYY PROFE its noos noos aka annusa… let me tell u something i found myself crying for the most randomest reason yesterday but it was because i finally relized it wasnt a joke like the jk thing or the mustache but u actually really left for good… wi remember the first day i meet u on the job and right away i didnt think that there was ever going to be a better teacher thats fun,funny,smart,interesting,thoughtful, and so much more that i could say but there is not a purfect enough word that there is in the dictionary that could describe you… but i know i am mad and i could cry and scream and not talk to anyone but i found out that thats not going to get you back… but i want you to know that when i left that class room that day i left with a hole bunch of memories that are great ones, i left with a great month with you… and u bacame like a second dad to me but my dad aint funny as you… but i know this may be a long comment but all this is to say thank you for everything and i love you… and because of you i know that i could do anything and remember when u see me on tv and movie screens some day remember to say i know that girl i know her, i was her spanish teacher!!! Profe. It take great charteristic, like you, to impact so many people like this. You impacted me in such an amazing. You showed that making a friend with anyone is possible. I was not in your class, I did not take FLE Spanish or Spanish one. Yet, you still acknowleged me, which I think is truely amazing! You are a great person. You make me want to QUIT french and do spanish, but now theres no point because you will not be there. :[ You are truely amazing. & you deserve to win PRIZES FOR YOUR AMAZINESS!!!.

Profe. i didnt get a chance to write u a long note but i decided to comment. Spanish is torture without u. i want to drop out. even if i try hard i am still going to fail. but i still want u to no how much everyone loves you, and how much people would do for u to come back. U are the most amazing, intelligent, funniest,.. well there are so many more but i dont feel like typing them all but ya person that anyone has ever met. i dont think a person that has came in and subed for such a small amount of time has made such an impact on EVERY single student. (even if they didnt have spanish) I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, and i will miss you forever. i cant wait to see you. never forget ur favorite student MELISSA.
Crowds of people gathering around a single substitute who is crying and hugging all of them. They are all trying to push their way through the crowds as they tell “We love you, Profe!”. Someone who didn’t know the unusual traits of this sub and these kids might find this a bit odd. They wouldn’t know about the kindness, humor, and vast knowledge that this sub had given all of these middle school kids. No one has ever seen such devotion to a teacher in a middle school. ESPECIALLY not to a sub.
These past two months you have given us have been the best experience we could ask for. You have found a way to teach middle schoolers that actually works(hard to do) You have befriended hundreds of kids that you once thought would be a nightmarish crowd of crazy people. You have changed Waluga for good. Thank you, Profe, for everything you have given to us, especially your friendship.

Not a sub in Waluga history has made such an impact on EVERYONE like you profe. Just the way you treat everyone like your best friend, or the way you talk to people like you’ve known them your entire life. A lot of my teachers don’t care about their kids. They are just there to teach and make money. The thing is with you is that you care about us. Your interest in our future goes past middle school. We all feel like you care if we graduate from college or become famous. Thank you for that profe.
