I recently had the great good fortune to hook up an almost 3 month teaching gig filling in for a woman on maternity leave. I got to teach Spanish and study skills (a lovely touch of irony, that…given my track record as a high school student). I was more than a little apprehensive going in, never having taught kids that age, and also having heard horror stories of the hormone-ridden hell that it can be. And, to my eternal surprise, I had an absolute blast and got to work with and befriend a bevy of curious, intelligent, kind, wacky, interesting teenagers.
The job ended this last thursday and I was devestated. Even though I’m completely stoked about getting back on the road (I have the ticket to colombia in my grubby little hands as we speak), I am sincerely going to miss walking into that school every day and experiencing the sizzling energy and optimism that those kids just naturally exude.
So, to all of you amazing “walugans” THANK YOU!! TAKE CARE!! STAY IN TOUCH!! and as a final spanish assignment the job of translating this:

profe!!! omg this made me cry….we miss you already!!! my culture points that you told me to keep cuz i was gonna read them to the class, i talked to mrs. dralle about them and she told i have to turn them in late now…
so now there 3 weeks late! she hates me! anyway, we miss you so much,and the whole school was depressed today cuz u were gone everyone misses you a ton and we all want you to come back. have a great time walking and never forget the amazing kids that changed ur life (especially kylee)

Hey Profe! oh my garnet, you made me cry in what you wrote about us! But the pics were awesome. I’m glad you put the 1 of me kicking in there, it’s my favorite.Today wasn’t as fun as it was when you were here. we went over everything we’ve already done and the desks are all weird and not as sociable. It sux a whole lot without you here and it’s going to be really hard with just mrs.dralle here all year!!! we all are going to miss u, hint 3rd period alot, and hope to see you in a couple years or even next. PROFE!!!! Hola, como estas? Gosh, Mrs. Dralle says compewtadora… she doesn’t make us emphasize our vowels at all! You told us to, so we all ephasize them and ask her why she doesn’t do it. I am supposed to be doing my LA essay but Matt tempted me. So, what’s up P-Unit. It was so funny today in Spanish because someone walked into our classroom to deliver a note and we all started clapping. Mrs. Dralle looked at all of us like we were crazy. bwahaha. She annoys me with her lack of pronouncing things right. And she kind of made fun of you in a way. She was like, “It’s good that you guys started off with vocab cards and pictures and stuff. That is like more like the elementary school way to teach.” I was like wow. Also, today we had to introduce other people in Spanish and Connor introduced Mac as MACK-THE-KNIFE lol. Profe’s Arrival. P1!!!
Like all beginnings it was tentative. The usual grimness of first time experiences set a certain tenseness to the atmosphere as I walked into the classroom. Questions ran through my head such as “Where should I sit, did I know anyone, and lastly, who was that weird guy sitting at the teachers desk?” We were later to learn from this man a very important lesson of our life (community) but for now he was simply labeled “the substitute.”
Like many a bachelor of this era he was sporting a half lackadaisical (and bizarre) arrangement of textures and colors. But mostly his garb was due to the fact that he was frankly awesome and no about to become a “conformist teacher.” The tardy bell rang roping in the last stragglers and the noise level grew.
The strange man rose and the class gave him and uneasy tentative look. “Haven’t you subbed before?” A voice from the back called out, and he nodded sending murmurs and anticipation around the room. “My name is Ian Reeves but you may call me, no, must call me Profe.” His command, and “malevolent” stare made it clear that he would be “Profe” and no one else, but mostly he was taken seriously because he had a YARDSTICK in his hands. Yet he was not frightening, he was quite a comical sight.
And so it began, the vicious cycle of school, and yet with Profe it wasn’t vicious. (At least not yet!) Attendance in our class began and Profe desperately tried to grasp each name and connect it with a face. There were certain names and people that stuck out, like Tony and Roy “the most serious of them all.” And then came the supposed future divorce agents “Conan and SAVAGE!” Although names like Brennen never seemed to appear, and names like Kevin were just better left for the chickens to devour. Instantly these names became more meaningful, as they were attached to a person we each seemed to say “Never gonna forget what Profe said about them!” I bet he knew all of his 6-some-odd classes by the fourth day. AMAZING.

HEYY PROFE its noos noos aka annusa… let me tell u something i found myself crying for the most randomest reason yesterday but it was because i finally relized it wasnt a joke like the jk thing or the mustache but u actually really left for good… wi remember the first day i meet u on the job and right away i didnt think that there was ever going to be a better teacher thats fun,funny,smart,interesting,thoughtful, and so much more that i could say but there is not a purfect enough word that there is in the dictionary that could describe you… but i know i am mad and i could cry and scream and not talk to anyone but i found out that thats not going to get you back… but i want you to know that when i left that class room that day i left with a hole bunch of memories that are great ones, i left with a great month with you… and u bacame like a second dad to me but my dad aint funny as you… but i know this may be a long comment but all this is to say thank you for everything and i love you… and because of you i know that i could do anything and remember when u see me on tv and movie screens some day remember to say i know that girl i know her, i was her spanish teacher!!! Profe. It take great charteristic, like you, to impact so many people like this. You impacted me in such an amazing. You showed that making a friend with anyone is possible. I was not in your class, I did not take FLE Spanish or Spanish one. Yet, you still acknowleged me, which I think is truely amazing! You are a great person. You make me want to QUIT french and do spanish, but now theres no point because you will not be there. :[ You are truely amazing. & you deserve to win PRIZES FOR YOUR AMAZINESS!!!.

I MISS U SO MUCH. the other day me and nus got yelled at for talking and it just wasnt the same w/o u smacking ur learning stick. or yelling for like 5 mins. haha.. good times =] but yeah we were listening to that one tape of the rapist/creeper guy and nus and i were just waiting for mrs dralle to pause the tape and imitate him but she never did. life sucks w/o u profe. u changed all of our lives and waluga. Profe. i didnt get a chance to write u a long note but i decided to comment. Spanish is torture without u. i want to drop out. even if i try hard i am still going to fail. but i still want u to no how much everyone loves you, and how much people would do for u to come back. U are the most amazing, intelligent, funniest,.. well there are so many more but i dont feel like typing them all but ya person that anyone has ever met. i dont think a person that has came in and subed for such a small amount of time has made such an impact on EVERY single student. (even if they didnt have spanish) I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, and i will miss you forever. i cant wait to see you. never forget ur favorite student MELISSA.

Crowds of people gathering around a single substitute who is crying and hugging all of them. They are all trying to push their way through the crowds as they tell “We love you, Profe!”. Someone who didn’t know the unusual traits of this sub and these kids might find this a bit odd. They wouldn’t know about the kindness, humor, and vast knowledge that this sub had given all of these middle school kids. No one has ever seen such devotion to a teacher in a middle school. ESPECIALLY not to a sub.
These past two months you have given us have been the best experience we could ask for. You have found a way to teach middle schoolers that actually works(hard to do) You have befriended hundreds of kids that you once thought would be a nightmarish crowd of crazy people. You have changed Waluga for good. Thank you, Profe, for everything you have given to us, especially your friendship.

Not a sub in Waluga history has made such an impact on EVERYONE like you profe. Just the way you treat everyone like your best friend, or the way you talk to people like you’ve known them your entire life. A lot of my teachers don’t care about their kids. They are just there to teach and make money. The thing is with you is that you care about us. Your interest in our future goes past middle school. We all feel like you care if we graduate from college or become famous. Thank you for that profe.

Hey Profe,
I saw you yesterday and I almost knocked you over cus i tripped. LOL. I was so excited that you had came to sub yesterday, all of my excitement just got bottled up and i had to run to you. I know i can’t change your decision about doing the rest of the walk, but i want you to know that you made a humongous (think that’s how you spell it….) impact on EVERYBODY in the school, even the people that didn’t know you. I posted before this and a day later there was like 20 more posts, lol. You have to come back and sub for my teachers.

I miss you a lot Profe, and I can not begin to describe how “depressed”, if you wanna use that word, people are that you have left. Gosh, I can’t begin to explain how sad I am that you left. I hope you have the best of discoveries on your trip. And send as many postcards as you can, and write more e-mails to me! I am waiting for your responses. I know I have to be patient, but it isn’t the same without you. Everybody still claps when people come in to deliver notes, and we try to carry out all of your decisions, but Sra. dralle won’t do the weird voice and say funny stuff after the rapist/stalker/molester talks… Well, times up, gotta go. well actually don’t stop by waluga because we are all probably gonna be in like 10th grade by the time you pass through LO so stop by lakeridge instead, or just simply run through town screaming at the top of your lungs until somebody that knows you notices you. either way will work. yeaaaaaaaaaaaah i want it to snow cuz it’s raining right now and it’s really depressing. i hope it’s not raining on u in south america cuz that would suck too. so anyways spansih is getting harder because mrs. dralle talks so darn fast that you can’t understand alot of things she is saying, so then she has to repeat it like 8 TIMES! i swear i think it’s actually killing my brain listening to her (but don’t tell her i said that or else she will assasinate me or something =0). Oh yah, and whenever you ask her how to say something in spanish, she never tells you! she will only say “Well, it depends.” maybe she should be taking a spanish class instead of teaching one! and none of my teachers want me to talk about you. mrs. meyers newcomb was asking people who their favorite teacher was and why on a weekly reflection assignment, and i put down “PROFE CUZ HE’S AWESOME AND HE HAS A BALL/RUBBERCHICKEN OF KNOWLEDGE!!!!” and she told me that you weren’t a teacher and that i couldn’t say you were my favorite. how sad. oh and by the way, the first day that mrs. dralle came back, nellie saw the ball of knowledge in the garbage can all deflated, so she ran over and was like “What have you done?! you killed it!!!” it was really funny. by the way, me and nellie wrote this song called PROFE a long time ago, and i found it today. you should totally hear it. it is a fresh prince of bel air remix that totally rocks! well, actually its not all the way finished but who cares? anyways, this is a really long post and its like 10:30 in the morning and i am tired right now cuz i went to bed at about 1:47 so i think i will stop typing right about…….now!
